How a plaster ceiling rose is made - from start to finish.
All our ceiling roses at www.plasterceilingroses.com are handmade from the finest quality gypsum plaster and this video shows the skill and care needed to make quality mouldings.
Step 1:
The first step is to coat the mould all over with a releasing agent by brushing it with linseed oil so the plaster doesn't adhere to the mould.
Step 2:
The liquid plaster (mixed to a lump free consistency) is then poured or splashed onto the mould and worked into every nook and cranny to ensure there is plaster covering all the enrichments and in the case of MPR062 this requires attention to detail.
Step 3:
Once covered successive layers of plaster are added and the plasterer works quickly knocking the solid mould occasionally to get rid of air bubbles. A mat of fibreglass is then built up and worked into the plaster and around the enrichments to give the rose strength.
Step 4:
At this stage, a hoop is also added so that the rose can be hung up to dry when it is finished. The back of the rose is then levelled against the edge of the mould in preparation for the second pouring of plaster. This too is spread and smoothed over the back leaving a central hole that is hollowed out behind which helps make the finished ceiling rose lighter. Smoothing occurs against the edge of the mould and in this way the finished rose has a flat back making it easier to fix in place.
Step 5:
The rose is left to dry for 30 mins and when the plaster has set, the back is tapped gently to encourage the casting to separate from the mould. The surface is checked for major imperfections and provided there are none it is hung up to dry further and the mould is prepared for the next casting.
Step 6:
