At the end of February 2024, the Marsh Creek Watershed Council hosted a field trip to the Dutch Slough Tidal Marsh Restoration Project site. The 1200-acre Dutch Slough project is the largest freshwater tidal marsh restoration project on the west coast of the Americas. The project created 600 acres of tidal marsh and rerouted Marsh Creek into the restored marsh.
The field trip host was John Cain, the Senior Conservation Director for River Partners, and along with him, there were several other participants, community members and staff from other agencies, that contributed knowledge about the area.
For the first part of the tour, we drove along pathways to view the restored areas. We walked a few miles, and along the way, discussed the changes that have taken place at the site over the last four years. We also talked about the challenges faced by various plant and animal species that make this habitat their home.
