Over the years accidents on the road have had many causes: speeding, drinking and driving, technical problems, human error. But one cause that is often overlooked is driver fatigue. Tired long-distance drivers may fall asleep while behind the wheel, inadvertently letting trucks drift from their lanes.
Scania is piloting a lane-keeping assistance function to help drivers steer and prevent vehicles from departing their lanes, which increases road safety.
Using the steering wheel, a driver can easily select a centre, left or right position within the lane. The system monitors lane markings and other features ahead of the truck and adjusts to follow the chosen track.
If the driver uses the turn signals to change lanes, the system will deactivate on that side and let the driver manoeuvre unhindered. In case the driver actively steers across lane markings without using turn signals, the lane-keeping assistance detects this and stands down until the driver returns to normal driving.
The lane-keeping assistance system is like a friendly co-driver. It gently helps to keep a truck on a clear path within its lane.
