This is a 30-minute special from BBC South West recorded in Plymouth in 1981 – the first of two she made. The short documentary-style film shows Brenda interviewing local residents about the topics covered in each song. The first, ‘Allan Apple’, is a memory from her childhood - the practice of giving loved ones a large and special apple to put under their pillow on October 31st each year to dream of a sweetheart – the event is known in the Cornish calendar as Allantide, and for this Brenda interviews her cousin Mary Harvey in Newlyn. For a song about the fishing industry in Newlyn, ‘The Rape of the Mackerel Shoals’ she talks to Newlyn fisherman Joe Brownfield, emphasising the difficulties that are still experienced by local fishermen today. Some things never seem to change.
