At Technobok we love ourselves a good bus and it's fair to argue that if you want S-Class levels of luxury, power and sophistication rolled into this kind of body style, it doesn't come much better than this.
Model Tested: Mercedes-Benz V300d Exclusive
- Power unit: 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel
- Power/Torque: 176 kW/500 Nm
- Transmission: 9-speed automatic
- Fuel economy: 8.8 L/100 km (claimed)
- Load space: 542 litres
Priced without options starting above R1.8million, the V300d isn't cheap, but then its trying to be cheap. What it is trying to be a bus which offers the highest possible levels of luxury and sophistication.
Three-pointed Star’s W447-generation minivan arrived in South Africa last year. The mighty V300d variant is powered by the Mercedes 2.0-litre OM 654 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which is mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission and, in its latest application, punches out a class-leading 176 kW at 4 200 rpm and 500 Nm of torque from 1 600 to 2 400 rpm.
Despite its large size and weight, it's brisk with Mercedes-Benz even claiming a 0-100 kph time of 7.8 sec and a 220-kph top speed! Where the V300d’s new drivetrain further enhances the line-up, is, however, is in its combination of power coupled with efficiency and refinement.
This latest V-Class has a number of further interior upgrades. The outdated COMAND infotainment system has made way for Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX system, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Full MBUX Voice Assistance is now on hand to control everything from the A/C temperature to the mood lighting within the cabin.
From suede roof lining, to several panoramic roof cutouts, from heated and cooled cup holders to heated and vented seats, it seems like the V-Class is moving ever closer to becoming a bus body form version of the mighty S-Class.
In terms of safety, the V300d Exclusive offers the expected 6 airbags as standard (can be optionally increased to 8) and the usual ABS with EBD and ESP package, but there are a number of more advanced features, too, including adaptive cruise control, active park assist, rear blind-spot alert and lane keep assist, among every other imaginable safety feature which you could think of.
In Conclusion
The V300d is certainly the best that the V-Class has ever been and that is saying rather a lot when you consider the luxury people moving image which it has built over many years. It comes at a price, but for those who expect the best and nothing less, the V300d certainly does deliver.
