Hot summers or cold winters can cause surprising spikes in your electric bill. With the right steps, you can make sure your HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system is contributing — not detracting — from your energy-efficient home.
Energy conservation often requires changes in habits. A little behavior modification in your heating and air conditioning usage can go a long way. Mix in a smart thermostat, some seasonal maintenance and a few home repairs, and you’ll be coasting toward energy efficiency in no time. Check out our energy-saving tips related to your home’s heating and cooling units.

It's too hot … it's too cold. If you're like most people, heating and cooling your home makes up almost half of your electricity bill. The easiest thing to do is to simply turn the temperature on your thermostat up a couple of degrees in the summer or down a couple of degrees in the winter. Or, take the next step to manage costs while staying comfortable with a smart thermostat. We really love the stylish Nest Learning Thermostat.
Don't forget to replace your air filters every month or two, which will also keep the air inside your home healthier.
One of the biggest ways to reduce your electric bill is to keep your home well-insulated and seal gaps in windows, doors and air ducts.
