The tense standoff around the Haitian army headquarters in Port-au-Prince has entered a second day with US troops being moved Tuesday to reinforce the headquarters guard.
US troops and tanks are trying to keep the peace, after a firefight Monday night between former Haitian soldiers and American forces. Four Haitians died in the clash.
American soldiers and heavy tanks occupied the plaza outside Haiti's army headquarters on Tuesday.
Scores of discharged Haitian soldiers stormed the building Monday night demanding back pay. The ensuing gun battle left four Haitians dead. A US Army spokesman said American military police exchanged fire with ex-Haitian soldiers.
US soldiers made at least a dozen arrests. One of those captured says active-duty Haitian soldiers took part in the deadly protest.
American forces man checkpoints - blocking access into the Haitian Army building. Heavy tanks - brought in from the Port-au-Prince airport - are in position around the building.
