The Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas) is a small tree that is a member of the dogwood family. Cold hardy and edible, the fruit tastes similar to cranberries to me. Very astringent when not ripe. The closest I can compare an unripe fruit to is the bitter-cherry, if you have ever had the unfortunate experience of tasting one of those. The one time I ate a bitter-cherry I used chokecherries to cleanse my palette. So the moral of the story is, wait until the Cornelian Cherry is ripe before you try to eat it.
