The journey of Michigan from a Territory to Statehood and how the first counties were named is a fascinating timeline. The territory was first occupied by the First Nation people, and then it became New France after French explorers journeyed into the interior. Eventually it was held by the British, and ultimately became a territory through an interesting evolution over time before it became the 26th State in the Union.
President Andrew Jackson's administration had a hand in naming nine of the twelve Southwest Michigan counties, and many others were named from Native American languages.
