Most commonly, lordosis occurs due to osteoporosis of the lumbar vertebrae. Osteoporosis is a medical condition resulting in the loss of bone mass. Lumbar spondylolisthesis is also a possible cause of lordosis. This condition is the forward dislocation of a lumbar vertebra.
Increased pressure on the spine due to obesity is another possible cause of lumbar lordosis.
If a woman has weak spinal muscles and ligaments, lordosis may occur due to pregnancy.
Inflammation of the intervertebral discs in the lumbar region of the spine can cause spinal deformity in this area. This medical condition is called discitis.
When kyphosis occurs, lordosis can also develop to compensate for increased stress on the lower spine.
