Creating this week's Old Home Place Recording was a testament to sheer perseverance in creativity against the odds of the outside world. We met up with Alex in downtown Asheville right when the thermometers hit their high for the day at 26 degrees. We thought about going inside but Alex was confident he could get it done in the environment he has come to know quite intimately. As a busker in Asheville, Alex knows the ins and outs of the city streets, where the light can warm you up, and where the acoustics sound their best.
Alex is one of the most dedicated students of the violin that I know. The instrument may as well be an extension of his arm. He fought his cold and numb fingers as we dealt with interrupted takes by city goers and strong gusts of icy wind. We finally set up in the alley right on the shadow line created by sun and building. We fell into a trance as he bounced between the light and the dark both sonically and visually.
Alex plays in different projects around Asheville and when the weather warms up a tad you will catch him downtown providing Asheville with a thoughtful soundtrack of warm violin tones.
