In his speech to the country, President Joe Biden noted that although Russia's defense ministry announced Tuesday that some soldiers will withdraw from Ukraine's borders after military exercises, so far the United States has not seen that.
Russian forces, meanwhile, are pushing closer to the border, even with medical supplies, and putting themselves in shooting positions. This is troubling U.S. authorities.
U.S. officials now openly warn Russia might attack "at any moment" because they think Russia now has all the essential components in place, including 150,000 soldiers in the area, to launch an immediate and violent invasion of Ukraine, according to the sources.
Even though Russian President Vladimir Putin has directed his military to be ready by Wednesday, Feb. 16, ABC News has learnt that he has not yet decided whether or not to launch an assault on his neighbor.
Rumored preparations to attack Ukraine have been disputed by the Russian government, which has blamed the United States of "hysteria" for issuing these increasingly urgent threats.
The U.S. thinks an invasion would likely start with electronic warfare and airstrikes on critical infrastructure, the sources said.
