Iconic Santorini
legance is the leitmotif of this property situated in the stylish (and quiet) village of Imerovigli. Stairs coil down past the white, pale blue and ochre façade to a good-sized pool on a terrace with breathtaking views of the caldera. For a small hotel the facilities are excellent too.
It’s not easy to find and doesn't have its own car park, but the hotel does offer a transfer service for guests arriving by ferry or air. he position easily deserves full marks on an island where it’s all about the view: from every angle they are striking – you can see the caldera, with the islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni in the centre and the surrounding villages blazing whiteley. Oia is eight miles (13km) north.
Perivolas
Perivolas, the hotel that put Oia on the map and spawned countless imitators, is in a league of its own. Minimalist suites carved from the cliffs are almost as dazzling as the sea views. The infinity pool is the stuff of honeymooners’ dreams – everyone looks like a swimwear model in this fabulous setting.
On the edge of Oia, poised on Santorini’s northern tip, Perivolas enjoys the celebrated sunsets without the crowds. Tranquillity and intimacy are the hotel’s USPs – unlike most hotels on the caldera, you can sunbathe in peace without passers-by gawking at you. It’s a twisting, turning 10-mile (16 km) drive to the airport, 12 miles (19 km) to the port.
Katikies Hotel
Santorini is the queen of sunsets, sea views and swimming pools – and Katikies is one of the best places to experience all three. The hotel is made up of dozens of whitewashed rooms tumbling down Oia's cliffside, all with knockout views of the caldera. The three infinity pools practically melt into the horizon.
This is the romantic Santorini that everyone dreams about, with uninterrupted views over a puzzle of whitewashed buildings dropping dramatically down over the caldera - the volcanic crater now partially submerged in the Aegean sea that makes the island’s landscape so instantly recognisable. The hotel has been built into the rocky cliffs in the popular village of Oia, meaning each room, pool and restaurant has direct sightlines over the water, but it’s the height that you find yourself at that makes the setting so dizzily beautiful.
Andronis Concept Wellness Resort
This imposing, no-nonsense spa resort is part of the Andronis luxury brand that currently dominates Santorini's hotel scene. It's surprising to find such spaciousness on such a cramped island, and the breadth and depth of treatments bring Switzerland – rather than Greece – to mind.
Andronis Concept is around five minutes' walk from Imerovigli, and between the capital Fira (just over one mile away) and Oia (six miles) – bordering on the Fira-Oia hiking path along the rim of the Santorini caldera. The hotel is perched on top of a slope, with views towards both sides of the island; from its Finesse suites you can watch the sunrise in your living room veranda and the sunset on your bedroom balcony.
Santo Maris Oia Luxury Suites & Spa
With five public pools and breathtaking sea views, this boho-chic, adults-only, all-suite resort is worlds away from – yet within walking distance of – bustling Oia. There's also a spa with heated indoor pool and a restaurant serving Cretan specialties.
Found just off the main Thira-Oia road, the hotel is very easy to find, but (best of all) there’s a decent sized car park opposite. The shops, cafés and museums of Thira town are approximately five miles away, and the archaeological site of Akrotiri is eight miles away.
