A sixth century AD Synagogue discovered near the shores of the Sea of Galiliee has been almost completely excavated by Israeli archeologists led by Dr. Moshe Dotan of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The synagogue was discovered near the ruins of an old roman bath part of which had been modernised and is still in use today. The synagogue is a building measuring about 20 meters by 25 meters. It appears to have been built on the remains of an older synagogue, The archeologists unearthed the mosaic floor of this older building and are now continuing their work to clear the rest. The mosaic is remarkably well preserved depicting a wheel with the face of Helius - the Sun God - in the middle. Segments of the wheel carry Hebrew scriptures. The wheel is supported by lions and the corners of the mosaic carry pictures of women depicting the four seasons.
