Toronto Mayor John Tory on Wednesday said the city is going in the "wrong direction" after reporting 22 new deaths due to the novel coronavirus.
Tory was joined by the Medical Officer of Health for the City of Toronto Dr. Eileen de Villa, who said the city is reporting 445 new cases of COVID-19. She said 191 people are in hospital and 44 are in intensive care as a result of the illness.
The mayor said he was speaking directly to two groups when discussing Toronto's "deeply troubling" COVID-19 case numbers. "We need your help parents," he said while trying to get his messaging of staying home to young people.
He said he's even been utilizing the TikTok social media platform to reach young people, as the city is seeing "increasing positivity" in younger age groups.
Tory also said he was reaching out to employers to put into place more protective measures. He said Toronto will be using more labour inspectors to keep businesses in check. He encouraged employers to put in measures for its employees to stay home if they are sick.
