Teach Situational Awareness
Although situational awareness is one of the most effective security tactics available, it is not something that is intuitive to most people. It must be learned.
For example, students and staff should be taught that wherever they are in the school building, they should make sure that they are aware of the locations of the nearest exits. They should not text or look at their phones for extended time periods no matter where they are on the premises. There are many other elements to situational awareness in addition to these, all of which should be taught to the entire school community.
Maintaining situational awareness costs nothing; however it is a worthwhile investment to bring in an outside expert to help you learn the basics. These should be reinforced frequently through drills and ongoing reminders. Simply remembering to pay closer attention to the surrounding environment can help to save many lives.
