The Battle of Teutoburg Forest was a decisive battle in Roman history. It was fought on September 9, 9 AD, between the Roman army led by Publius Quinctilius Varus and a Germanic coalition led by Arminius, a Cheruscan chieftain who had served as a Roman auxiliary officer. The battle resulted in the annihilation of three Roman legions, the deaths of an estimated 20,000 Roman soldiers, and the retreat of the Roman army from Germania.
