Have you ever wondered why do some people stay calm under pressure while others panic? Cognitive Appraisal Theory helps us understand why people react differently to the same situation. This theory suggests that our emotional responses are determined by how we interpret and evaluate an event, rather than the event itself.

Cognitive Appraisal Theory was developed by psychologists Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman. They proposed that our emotions are the result of a two-step appraisal process. First, we evaluate the significance of an event (primary appraisal). Then, we assess our ability to cope with it (secondary appraisal). Our emotional response depends on these appraisals.
