I was 24 when first I went to Vietnam, working for BBC TV (main picture). For my generation of journalists of every nationality, Vietnam was the place we wanted to be: to watch unfolding an epic human and political tragedy and also, let us be frank, to test our young manhood. As a correspondent, I witnessed the last weeks of fighting (bottom left), the terrified migration of tens of thousands of beaten South Vietnamese troops and millions of civilian refugees.
