The military leader of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore, has strongly denied the claims put forward by Ghana's President Nana Akufo Addo concerning Burkina Faso's alleged association with Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group. During an interview with Alain Foka, President Traore, without calling names, dismissed the assertions as untrue and stressed that the accusations made previously are unfounded.
“Unfortunately, we have seen heads of state who fell into that lies and went to tell that we supposedly gave mines in our southern part to Russia. That's a lie," he said.
“If the Russians want a mine we have our mining code. hey come, they integrate and acquire license, they pay their taxes and everything they have to do like everyone else. So there is nothing we give Russians,” he added.
Last year during the US-Africa leaders summit Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo asserted that Burkina Faso's military administration has engaged Russian mercenaries to aid in combating insurgency within their nation and is compensating them with resources from a mine.
"Today, Russian mercenaries are on our northern border,” Akufo-Addo said. “Burkina Faso has now entered into an arrangement to go along with Mali in employing the Wagner forces there and I believe a mine in the southern part of Burkina has been allocated to them as a form of payment for their service. To have them operating on our northern border is particularly distressing for us in Ghana,” he added.
