Any acute severe infection has to be treated appropriately. IF left untreated, then the chances of a spread of infection from one focus to the other focus is very common. If the infection crosses the tonsillar capsule and spreads into the space, that results in an abscess called as peritonsillar abscess or Quinsy. It is a very painful condition and the patient cannot swallow any liquids. They will be very toxic with a very high temperature and they will come with a toxic condition including drooling of saliva. We need to sometimes admit them, give them IV fluids, IV antibiotics and drain the abscess. Other conditions include parapharyngeal space infection called as parapharyngeal abscess, retropharyngeal abscess. There can be necrotiosing fascitis in an immunocompromised child with a very severe streptococcal infection. These infections can ascend into the sinuses resulting in sinusitis, the infections can travel down the respiratory tract resulting in laryngitis, tracheitis, or tracheobronchitis. Hence it is important to control the infection and treat it appropriately and sometimes even surgically.
