My good friend Robert Kuang and I have decided that we're going to start having weekly conversations around power, privilege, oppression, and all the other hot topics.
We are both coaches, who work in an industry that is known for helping people break free of stories that hold them back, and we love being apart of this space.
We also feel this industry and space doesn't always address the lived reality of many people.
It's a space full of 'leaders' who we feel aren't always actually leading.
Some are, and they are doing a beautiful job of it.
However there are others that are in it more for personal gain, status and wealth, then they are to truly transform others and the world.
Our hope is that by having these conversations, it helps you have the same conversations. Whether with yourself, us or others.
We need to start having conversations with people who challenge us, while actually giving them space and listening to what they say. We don't need to agree, but we need to start listening to people who have different experiences.
Otherwise we're just constantly speaking into echo chambers, who confirm our bias, which leads to stagnation.
We all want positive change, we just don't all agree on what that actually means or entails.
You don't need to agree with anything that Robert and I share. Everything is simply our perspectives, thoughts and opinions.
In this conversation we talk about...
- intersectionality (how our experiences make up 'who' we are/think we are)
- over-identification with our 'identities' (when it helps us and when it traps us)
- the sucker punch of being told to 'check your privilege' and how saying that to someone, can actually be an act of privilege
- how our egos and sense of self are constantly being triggered and why that makes it so hard for us to have these tough, but needed conversations around power and privilege
- how being a 'good' person, can sometimes make us a 'bad' person
- how to hear other people's perspectives, without having to agree with them (hostility met with hostility only creates more hostility)
- the idea of 'power over' vs 'power with'
and more!
We hope you enjoy and if you ever want us to talk about a specific topic let us know.
