Your 11 p.m. Northeast Ohio weather forecast for Sept. 26, 2024: The Gulf of Mexico is getting lots of attention today and rightfully so as Hurricane Helene continues to strengthen and move toward the Florida Panhandle -- expected to make landfall late this evening just to the east of Tallahassee.

This is a massive storm. Some hurricanes are relatively small and some are relatively big -- this one is BIG. Tropical storm force winds are expected to extend some 300 miles out from the center or circulation--that's a big deal.

The result will be a widespread area seeing impactful weather in the southeastern US from Helene. Power outages and flooding are likely in Florida, all of Georgia and the Carolinas into Tennessee as this system moves north. Despite the fact that landfall is expected later this evening -- this storm system will bring impacts to Northeast Ohio a mere 16-20 hours later!

So let's talk local weather. We'll deal with lingering clouds today and that heavy, murky feeling continuing as a deep flow of tropical air continues over the area. Leftover showers are possible as highs push into the mid 70s.

Friday will feature the impacts from Helene approaching from the south. We'll turn breezy as the day goes on with bands of rain slowly making their way into northern Ohio from south to north. Friday evening plans look to feature bands of rain and breezy conditions with temps in the 70s.

This system quickly falls apart Saturday with lighter wind and just scattered showers locally. Scattered rain will continue Sunday into Monday as moisture lingers across the Ohio Valley. A sweeping cold front still looks on track for Tuesday that will bring one last round of showers before cooler, fall-like air finally makes an appearance by Wednesday. Highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s and 50s look likely to end next week!
