In 2014, Sohi Yoon was shocked and saddened to learn of the Sewol Ferry incident, in
which more than 300 people died, many of whom were young students. The captain had
instructed the passengers to remain on board, though he personally abandoned the
sinking ship. In this talk, Yoon wrestles with some complex and potentially disturbing
questions: What would have happened if the passengers hadn’t been Korean? Could our
cultures condition us sometimes to react against our own best interests?
Sohi Yoon is a Korean student, currently completing her final year at the International School of Prague. She has lived in various countries including India, South Korea, China, and now the Czech Republic. The inspiration for this talk came from Yoon’s study of Psychology and Theory of Knowledge.
