The anti-government revolt, which has been sweeping southern Albania, spread north for the first time on Tuesday (11/3), when residents of a major town north of Tirana apparently a military base and carted away weapons and ammunition.
The insurgents set fire to the police station and captured a weapons
factory and three military barracks.
The current unrest was triggered when high risk, "pyramid" investment scemes went sour, costing nearly every Albanian family money. Many even lost their life-savings in the financial debacle.
The rebels now control 13 towns in the rebel-torn south of the country, the equivalent of about one quarter of the country's territory.
Looting also continued in the southern town of Berat, despite efforts by
community leaders to try to prevent further chaos. People broke into an army food warehouse and looted grain supplies.
