Try this easy science experiment at home with a glass of water, a paper plate, a cardboard tube, a broomstick, and an egg. 🧑🔬
How does it work? An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an outside force. The broomstick applies an outside force to the plate and tube, but very little of this outside force acts on the egg. Gravity then pulls the egg straight down into the water – splash! That’s science.
The principle is known as Newton's first law of motion, which states that an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion with a constant velocity unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. This law is also known as the law of inertia. Inertia is the property of an object to resist a change in its state of motion. Newton's first law of motion helps to explain why an object will remain at rest or in motion unless acted upon by a force.
