Try soft clipping instead of over compressing a vocal. You can do this by using virtual preamp or console emulation or even tape, anything that adds saturation will reduce the need for graphics her compressing a vocal and thus retaining life in the vocal.

This not to say you shouldn't use compression, but use it in moderation. The problem with too many of commercial music today is everything is compressed to death.

Use tips like saturation, vocal riding and volume automation in conjunction with light compression for better results.
