The final four minutes before they roost. Filmed in infra-red and completely unedited. After three months of this fantastic spectacle, every evening, at a range of locations along the Welland in North Cambridgeshire. The favoured spot to roost seemed to change almost randomly but no doubt influenced by factors that any inspired onlookers wouldn't be able to resolve! Possibly the wind direction or wind strength, possibly the previous presence of peregrines and other predators and maybe even the decision of the leading bird! Who knows......
On this occasion it was well beyond sunset time and with thick cloud and a strong wind my video options were restricted. Hence the use of infra-red and the addition of a pleasant(hopefully) soundtrack in keeping with the pulsating movement of the flock. Before they descend to roost the final destination has usually been chosen - in this case the reedbed surrounds of a local fishing lake - and therefore the main activity is within a fairly restricted area. Minutes before it seemed they had chosen a different lake, part of the current gravel-extraction activity - a mile away and in a different direction. As usual - with Nature - whilst you can be fairly certain something will happen, you probably can't predict exactly when, where and how!
