(27 Sep 2020) Centre-right politician Nicusor Dan was on Sunday predicted by exit polls to become the new Mayor of Bucharest after Romanians went to the polls across the country.
Dan, who was backed by the Romania's Liberal Party, defeated the Social Democratic party incumbent Gabriela Firea.
Center-right candidates supported by the liberals also won three of the six district city halls in Bucharest, according to the same exit poll.
Romanians were voting amid growing numbers of COVID-19 infections, to elect city mayors and councils for the next four years.
More than 19 million people wearing masks and gloves cast their ballots in an election considered a test run for parliamentary elections scheduled for December.
