At least in the iMac world (but I think elsewhere too), it is really difficult to edit 4k 4:2:2 HEVC (h.265) footage (dropped frames in playback) whereas 4:2:0 HEVC (h.265) footage edits just fine (no dropped frames) using DaVinci Resolve. I'd much rather shoot in 420 than 422 as long as I am not giving up much. This test is a comparison of both modes @24p (100 Mbps).
As a side note, 120p 4k using XAVC HS edits just fine in 420. At least with h.265 it appears the problems editing center on 422. If you can get away with using 420 instead of 422, graphics cards seem to handle the footage just fine all the way up to 120p 4k.
Do I lose anything by using 420 vs 422? Is there less macroblocking using 422 vs 420? What am I giving up by using 420 (at least with the Sony A7SIII)?
This test first compares footage with normal color grading, then pushes the grading to its limits and reveals... I let you be the judge.
