TRANSCRIPT:
Matt de la Peña: So, hey guys. I just wanted to ask you a couple of questions about books. I'm an author, right. Do you guys love to read?
Savannah: Yeah.
[Other kids nod their heads in agreement.]
Sam: I like to read, like, fantasy books or something.
Matt: Do you really?
Sam: Yeah.
Matt: Do you think that the character looks like you?
Sam: Umm...no. I think, ‘cause he's like, he had black hair and he's white.
Matt: What is the normal character that you read in books?
Charlotte: A young white person?
[Another girl at the table nods in agreement.]
Matt: Do you ever encounter characters that look like you, in books?
Parker: It doesn't...I didn't really think about it. I mean, it wasn't any different. Except that there's dim sum.
Matt: And you have a little experience with dim sum?
Parker: I have a lot of experience with dim sum.
Abbie: I've been reading Fancy Nancy. Well, she's white, but I like that her and her friend are friends, but her friend is an African American.
Matt: Oh, interesting.
Abbie: And it's almost like me and my neighbor friend. Because me and her—I'm white, I mean, I'm African American, and she is sort of white, but we're still friends, like Fancy Nancy is with her friend Bree.
