Russia will deploy Bastion mobile anti-ship coastal defense missile in the Arctic this year, said Northern Fleet Commander Admiral Vladimir Korolev on Monday.

Bastion-P coastal defense missile system carries two P-800 Oniks cruise missiles that are 8.6 meters long and 0.67 meters in diameter and can carry warheads up to 250 kilograms.

The launcher can launch its two-stage propulsion system missile within 5 minutes of traveling with an interval of two to five seconds in between launches. The missiles use solid-fuel rocket booster for initial acceleration and liquid-fuel ramjet for sustained cruising, according to Military-Today.

With a range of up to 300 kilometers, the missile can fly at an altitude of 14,000 meters and decrease to 5 meters above sea level with supersonic speed at the final stage of its flight.

The Bastion-P missiles will join the S-400 missile complexes and the Pantsir-S systems already deployed to the Northern Fleet's anti-air defense in the Arctic.

“The Russian military group in the Arctic will be built up on the mainland and on the islands. This buildup is already in progress. By 2018 there will emerge a self-sufficient group incorporating radio reconnaissance companies, the way it was in the past,” an unnamed senior official of Russia’s Defense Ministry told Russia’s state news agency Itar-Tass.
