THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL

The Appalachian trail is by far the most famous hiking trail on the eastern side of the United States. Completing the Appalachian trail thru hike, meaning from one end to the other, is an ambitious goal. Nevertheless, those who complete it will not only have a vast amount of stories to tell and major bragging rights. After all, it’s 2,190 miles long and goes through 14 states. By the end, your feet will have walked up and down a grand total of 464,500 vertical feet. That’s like putting Mount Everest on the coast and hiking up to the summit and back down 8 times. Whether you’re hiking the Appalachian Trail from start to finish, trekking it in pieces, or taking an afternoon stroll somewhere along its long path you become part of this iconic trail.

THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL AT HARPER'S FERRY.

For this segment of “We See Here” we had 20 minutes to experience the Appalachian Trail. We allotted 10 minutes to run through Harper’s Ferry National Park museum, before heading out on the trail. That ten minute time-frame quickly became a half hour as the volunteer park ranger was determined to give us the entire history of Harper’s Ferry. Which, is significantly more important than I had originally expected. He is a great guy full of knowledge and the ability to tell history in an engaging way.

As we were about the only visitors to the national park that day, we were delighted when a lone visitor got wrangled in to accompany us in the comprehensive history lecture. That is when we made our quick getaway, expressing our gratitude for the information as we slipped out the front door.
MORE OF A STROLL THAN A HIKE

Up some stone steps we went, past the quaint but elaborately designed church, and to the sign that indicated we were officially on the Appalachian trail. After a quick picture, we walked with delighted pleasure knowing we were on the renowned trail. A short distance from the chapel is the famous Jefferson’s Rock. Just passed the rock, the trail turns to a well beaten, dirt, single track path. We went along it for about two hundred yards. If only the audible hum of the nearby highway could be turned off the location would be quite serene and peaceful, especially with the continuous melody of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers playing their eternal tunes. There is a sense of awe, knowing the historical figures that walked this wedge of land between the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers. These people have included founding fathers, ingenuitive thinkers, civil war soldiers and commanders, and at least 12,000 trekkers who have completed the whole trail since the 1930s. The region around Harper’s Ferry is replete with the footsteps of times continuous march.

WE SEE HERE WILL RETURN.

To say we “hiked” on the Appalachian trail would be a deplorable over-exaggeration. We had about 20 minutes to spend on the trail. Obviously not enough time to do any real tour of the hike. Nevertheless, it left a lasting impression. We were filled with the desire to return and actually put some miles on the soles of our shoes. Hopefully the next trip out east will result in such a dream being fulfilled.

The stumble at the very end of this video was not intentional. My four year old skater shoes have no tread on them and the rock was slicker than I thought. Moral of the story: always wear good hiking shoes when hiking.
