(26 May 2016) Top European Union officials on Thursday urged the Group of Seven major economies to show solidarity in helping European nations cope with the influx of thousands of migrants and refugees.
European Council President Donald Tusk told reporters in Ise Shima that G7 leaders, who are gathering in Japan for their annual summit, had to take the lead in "managing" the crisis.
Hundreds of thousands of people, many from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, have tried to seek asylum in wealthier European countries after fleeing war and poverty.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and fellow leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United States are holding a two-day summit in Japan's coastal region of Ise-Shima focused on boosting trade and economic growth, as well as tackling other global issues.
Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker are both representing Europe at the G7 summit.
Both leaders made reference to the UK's upcoming referendum on whether it should remain in or leave the European Union.
Tusk also said the EU was ready to continue with sanctions against Russia over its role in the Ukraine conflict.
