In November the Sportrock performance Institute hosted our first ever Youth Training Camp.
The camp was run by Sportrock’s Jermey Hardin who is a Level 5 USAC Routesetter and has set all over the country for both National Championship and International World Cup events, and Taylor Reed, a world-renowned coach who has trained youth national team members, national champions, and worldcup athletes.
Sportrock also brought in the Thread Climbing crew, National Chief Routesetters, Chris Danielson, who has set at international events all over the world and is the only IFSC Chief Routesetter in America, Brad Weaver, a National Sport Climbing Champion, Junior IFSC Routesetter who has climbed grades of v14 and 5.14d.
Athletes learned directly from the routesetters about movement and the thought process behind setting competition boulder problems.
Athletes broke into small groups and got to climb with guidance from world-class routesetters. They learned about movement and the thought process that goes into setting competition-style boulders.
While athletes climbed the boulders the routesetters tailored the climbs to the athletes in real-time, in a process called supportive setting!
This is a unique opportunity that does not come around very often, and the athletes who participated got a lot out of it!
