This week, we are looking at Samuel’s call to anoint one of Jesse’s sons and his surprise that it was David, the youngest and least thought of. We also look at Jesus’ parables of seeds growing from very inauspicious starts into a great harvest or large tree. As such, we are challenged about how we view ourselves and others and ask whether we are too hasty to write off that which is insignificant at the time but which might bear great fruit. God did not give Samuel all the answers beforehand but ensured that he had to stay close to God in selecting the right son to anoint. In these difficult times, we too must stay close to God.

Here are some questions for you to consider either on your own or with others:
1. Jesus taught in his parables about seeds, seemingly insignificant, growing into a large harvest or a big tree. Looking back, how has something that seemed insignificant at the time become important in your life?
2. David was the youngest in his family, too unimportant to be included in the family’s meeting with Samuel, yet he was the one to be anointed king. How does that speak to either your own or others’ view of yourself and how might God use you?
3. Samuel judged Jesse’s sons by their outward appearance, while God looks at the heart. How do you judge other people and how do they judge you?
4. How big is your vision for your life? Is it as small as a mustard seed or is it as big as a mighty tree? What do you think God’s vision is for your life?
5. Samuel spoke God’s truth into David’s life as he anointed him. Who is speaking God’s truth into your life, and to whom are you being called to speak God’s vision for their life?
6. What are your expectations for the next twelve months? In 1 Chronicles 4:10, Jabez prays, “Oh that you would enlarge my territory!” Ask God to expand your vision.
