Carabiners are designed and tested to be loaded across the long axis, which is along the spine of the carabiner. This What's Wrong video shows the carabiner improperly loaded in three directions, known as tri-axial loading. Tri-axial loading transfers some of the load off the spine and puts it on the gate of the carabiner, which is the weakest component of the carabiner. A Screw Link, also known as a Delta or Tri-Link is common way to solve the problem. The threads of the Screw Link must be fully engaged when it is closed. The CMC School keeps a Screw Link attached to each of our Anchor Straps to address this issue.
