As well as exotic animals, we also had prehistoric creatures at Paignton Zoo.
Indeed, Torbay is an area that has always been rich in natural history, evidence of which can be found underground in the cave systems on the Paignton Zoo site. The cave systems are home to protected bat species, the greater horseshoe and lesser horseshoe bats and every month our reserves warden surveys the caves to assess the numbers of the bat species within. The data that is collected at Paignton Zoo is reported to the National Bat Monitoring Programme (NBMP), run by the Bat Conservation Trust.
Greater horseshoe bats are 6-7 centimetres long with a wingspan of 35-40 centimetres, they weigh around 34 grams and live for up to 30 years. Lesser horseshoe bats are smaller than their greater relatives, normally 4-5 centimetres in length with a 20-25 centimetre wingspan, they only weigh up to 9 grams and also live for up to 30 years. Both species are protected in the UK under the wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
