New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Signs Bipartisan Pension and Health Benefits Reform Bill Into Law at the Trenton War Memorial on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 (Transcript Below).
Governor Christie: I felt those people because their union leadership had so ill-served them by the lies and the purely political kind of language that they were using to try to characterize what's going on here, and let's face it Terry, what they were really doing was trying to cover up their own failures. Because they were complicit in setting up this Ponzi scheme. They were complicit in it. They knew as well as anybody else that promises were being made that weren't being paid for. And so, they're in the position now of having to cover up their own failures to their members. And that's part of why you try to gin up that anger, if you misdirect them to be angry at somebody else, they won't turn their eyes to look at you. That's part of what went on. But on the second part of your question, did it affect my resolve and my position on what we had to do? Absolutely not. Not at all. You know, it affected me personally and I felt it, but in terms of affecting what I had to do, I got sent here to do a job. I didn't get sent here to be elected prom king.
