France, Britain, Germany and the European Union have sent an official request to the US for their companies to be exempt from measures resulting from fresh American sanctions on Iran. In the June 4 letter, they singled out key areas where they expected exemptions for EU firms, including pharmaceuticals, energy and banking. They also expect the United States as an ally to refrain from taking actions that would harm Europe's security interests.
Several major companies including France's Total and the Netherlands' Maersk have already said it will be impossible to stay in Iran once the sanctions are fully reimposed over the next six months, unless they receive exemptions from Washington.
