Hi there, Kia owners. Today, on your 2018 Kia Optima, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install Tekonsha's T-One four-pole, flat trailer connector vehicle wiring harness. You'll find your wiring harness here at the back of the vehicle. It will be stored inside the vehicle. And I actually like this because that's gonna ensure that our connector here is protected against the elements. You can keep it bundled up there in the back, so it stays out of sight.
So, it's really nice because it's just a hidden harness. Nobody knows you've got it in here and it's gonna ready when you need it. Just pop your trunk open. The harness will drape down out the back and it'll pinch between the weather stripping, and that's not gonna damage it. It's gonna hold it in place for you.
You do just wanna make sure you avoid the striker at the middle that is the one component here that could damage our wiring. And now we've got it shut, you can see we've got plenty of length here at the back to be able to plug into our trailer. And we're gonna receive all of the necessary lighting signals with this harness. It'll give us our left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps and brake lamps. So, it's gonna be great for all of our towing needs.
And what I like about this harness is that it's a custom-fit harness that will plug directly into the connectors on our vehicle, which makes the installation very fast. And it has a module in line. So, the module will monitor the circuits from our factory lights on our vehicle, and then it will reproduce those signals and send it out our flat pole to our trailer. This is nice because if we have any faults on our trailer like a short or anything like that, rather than affecting the lights on our vehicle, it would just affect the performance of the module. The module would shut that circuit down and it could potentially open a fuse, but that fuse will be specific for your module and not affect your lights.
Now that we've covered some of the features of our wiring, why don't you follow along with me and we'll show you how to get it installed. Since this does just plug right in and everything's here in the back of the vehicle in the truck, this is something you can probably do in about 20 minutes. We'll begin our installation here at the back of the vehicle. We'll need to remove the threshold here, so we can feed our wiring across from one side to the other. We can access the connectors here in the trunk, so we don't need to be outside the vehicle. You'll have pins here on each side. And these fasteners, they have a little slit in the middle for putting a screwdriver in. We can just unthread those out of there. And sometimes they get stubborn and they get a little stuck because they are just plastic. So, we might have to put a trim panel tool behind it just to give a little bit of outward pressure as we're twisting it out of there. And there we go, we got it off of there. The outward pressure just sometimes necessary to get it to actually thread off. There's one just like that on the other side, so we'll get that one removed as well. Then we can just lift up on our paneling here. That'll just allow us to grab underneath our threshold. Starting on one side, we're just gonna work our way down. Pulling upward to get that released. You may or may not have fasteners that stay behind. That's okay if you do. You can see them here in our panel. If one does stay behind, just take your trim panel tool, get underneath of it there, and you can just pop that out of there. And it'll just slide right back in the opening notch there. And there we go. Now, we've got that ready, we'll just set this outside here. Get this out of the way. On each side, you're gonna have a panel here that's gonna reveal your wiring. We're just gonna twist this. And then we can pull that out of there once you twist it, just pops out. You can see the little tab there that was holding it in place. And here's our taillight wiring right here. This is where our harness is gonna plug into. If we follow the curve though down, you'll see there's a fastener right here. We'll go ahead and grab our trim panel tool and we're gonna remove this one fastener as well. And that'll just make it a little bit easier to be able to feed our wiring right up behind there. So now, we'll take our harness and our factory connector. We're gonna unplug the factory connector first. Slide the harness behind the paneling here. Bring it out through that hole. Take the factory connector that you just unplugged and plug it into your harness. And then the other end of your harness will just plug right in
