Day Lilies are nice in provided a rush of flowers mid Summer. Yet the foliage is almost always a mix of healthy green and dying yellow, which makes keeping a neat look frustrating. I find out if I do one cut back right after all blooms have died back. Then comes new green leaves that lasted till Winter. Had I not done that, the plant will be messy from August to November. A second cut back before harsh Winter is my preference . It will be difficult to clean up once the new growth show up next Spring. I do not notice any set back by doing this. Besides, I can use the space for something else if it does not work out. Keeping my tiny yard neat looking is important to me.
