Quick 21.5 KTM 450 Factory Edition Walk around and checking out the myKTM connectivity unit. The myKTM app works with the connectivity unit to change the engine performance characteristics. To create an engine map you start by selecting the from 3-types of tracks (Sand, Gravel, or Hard Pack in wet or dry condition) with each track having a unique torque and HP curve. Next using a sliding 1 to 5 scale you can tune engine parameters including throttle response, engine braking, traction control, and launch control for the map you are creating. Then you send the map to the bike. This newly created map will be on the Map 1 position of the Map switch. Map 2 is always the "aggressive" map as delivered by KTM.
While only a quick ride around the shop it was easy to feel the differences in the maps. I first tried the Sand Track (dry) with maximum throttle response, minimum engine braking, and minimum traction control. With this map the the initial throttle response was much more aggressive compared to the stock engine map. Engine braking was reduced but not as much as the throttle response was increased.
Next I tried the Gravel (dry) base map with the softest throttle response and minimum engine braking. The initial throttle response much softer with a slower build up of power with increasing RPM. This would be a very good trail or woods riding map.
This was only a quick check but it was easy to noticeably change the performance characteristics of the KTM 450 engine with my smart phone. KTM has taken a different approach compared to the Yamaha smart phone app which requires the user to know what changes to make to ignition timing and fueling amounts for the desired engine characteristic targeted. KTM took a simpler approach of allowing the rider to choose the overall power curve they are looking for (selecting the track type) and then fine tuning engine parameters with a sliding scale. The myKTM app decides what changes to make to the ignition and fuel mapping to create the desired effect. Not sure one approach is better than the other but nice to finally have a quick way to tune a KTM bike. Really looking forward to trying out the myKTM app and connectivity unit at the track and on the trails soon!
