STORYLINE
Iraq's president, a Kurd, said on Monday that Kurdish rebels will announce a cease-fire, his office confirmed, as tensions soared over a Turkish threat to stage a cross-border incursion against guerrilla bases in northern Iraq.
President Jalal Talabani said the Kurdistan Workers' Party, known by its Kurdish acronym PKK, would make the announcement later on Monday.
Meanwhile AP Television filmed the aftermath of Turkish artillery bombardment in the border area of Nazdur, showing damaged buildings, roads and a bridge.
Turkish artillery units shelled Kurdish rebel positions along the rugged Turkish-Iraqi border on Sunday in retaliation for a rebel attack that killed at least 12 soldiers in Hakkari.
Military officials also confirmed on Monday that eight of its soldiers were missing after the ambush by Kurdish rebels.
The military said it had had no contact with the eight soldiers after Sunday's clash and said 34 rebels had been killed so far in the offensive launched in retaliation for the Hakkari attack.
On Monday, dozens of Turkish military vehicles were seen heading toward the Iraq border.
It was unclear whether the vehicles were being sent to reinforce troops engaged in fighting with rebels on Turkish soil or were preparing for possible cross-border action.
Tens of thousands of Turkish troops are already deployed in the border area.
Turkey says rebels periodically cross the border to stage attacks in their war for autonomy for Turkey's predominantly Kurdish southeast.
More than 30-thousand people have died in the conflict that began in 1984.
