Hi everyone!
My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about the stomach worm in dogs. This stomach worm is called physaloptera. This very unique parasite leaves in the stomach of the dog and is called the stomach worm.
The stomach worm can cause a number of different symptoms. The symptoms are like gastritis or a stomach ulcer. Some dogs will vomit, have nausea, or anorexia from the stomach upset form the worms. If the stomach worms cause stomach bleeding, a pet owner may notice black or tart like stool. This is from the blood from the stomach being digested and turned from red to black int he small intestines.
In some cases the stomach worm will not cause any GI symptoms. This means they are asymptomatic.
A dog will get a stomach worm after eating an insect that has the stomach worm larvae inside of their little insect body. The worm will move from the insect into the dogs stomach after ingestion.
There are a few different ways to diagnose a stomach worm infection. Using endoscopy or a camera to visualize the stomach is one of the best ways. See the worms laying on the stomach mucosal lining allows for a diagnosis.
This may not be an option, so looking for stomach worm eggs in the fecal or vomit can be a good option too, but a fecal float does not work very well. A direct fecal smear is a better option than a fecal float.
A veterinarian may also just deworming to cover any parasites that were not diagnosed.
