Thousands of people in the capital city of Yerevan marched from Republic Square to the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial to commemorate the 108th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The torchlight procession started at 7:30 pm local time and lasted until approximately 11:30 pm. The Armenian Report team was present at the event.
Around 10,000 individuals carried torches while marching through the city on Sunday night to pay tribute to the estimated 1.5 million Armenians who were killed in Ottoman Turkey more than a century ago. The procession began at a central square, and activists ignited the flags of Turkey and Azerbaijan, highlighting the recent tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
During the last days of the Ottoman Empire, up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks, making it the first genocide of the 20th century.
Armenians worldwide observe Genocide Remembrance Day on April 24, marking the start of the killings in 1915.
