How Should You Place your Overheads?
In this Stereo Drum Overhead Mic Placement lesson, Robert compares Condenser, Ribbon, and Dynamic Microphone on the drum kit.
2 positions are tested, 32" from the snare, and 40" from the snare.
The closer position will emphasize the attack of whatever drum or cymbal is directly below the microphone, and somewhat reject peripheral instruments, especially in the case of the ribbon microphone.
The hIgher position captures the whole kit in a more open and balanced image. Always make sure to measure for phase when testing different mic positions. 2-3 drum sticks from the center of the snare is a good starting point.
