A quick vid of how I prep my brass. I pick up my brass at ranges after personal training days with the team or after we finish teaching our courses using a rolling nut picker from Bag-a-Nut. It's pricey but worth the investment if you want to save your back, legs and a crap ton of time. Not everything is shown in the video but below is a step-by-step guide on what I do.
Brass Prep:
1. Sort and separate the brass
2. Do a 1 hour tumble with 1tsp of Dawn dishwashing soup, 1 tsp of Lemishine and 1tsp of Zep Industrial Cleaner
3. Dump out the water
4. Quick rinse (you can skip this if you want to)
5. Do another 1.5 cycle of tumbling with the same solution minus the Zep
6. Dump out the water
7. Separate the stainless steel media
8. Dry in a dehyrator at 160 degress for 30 minutes and then rotate all the trays so that the bottom one is now at the top. The heat from the dehydrator comes from the top so this ensures that all of the brass is completely dry. Total dry time is 1 hour.
Other tips:
1. Letting brass sit in the water solution for long periods of time can sometimes change it’s color.
2. If you're short on time, do a 1.5 tumble (as your step 2) and then skip to step 5. I like doing an initial tumble to get rid of most of muck for cleaner brass.
3. I consider the second tumble (1.5 hour) as my "polishing stage". That's why I do it this way.
4. The dehydrator saves time and space. Much better than laying out a few hundred pieces of brass all over towels to dry.
Stainless steel media tumbling uses a good amount of water. My process uses about 2 gallons. Building a 2-bucket water filter system is next on the list so I can recycle my water.
My method isn't perfect but it works for me. This process is really dictated by personal preference and your level of OCD.
