9. How Many Cleopatras?
Even though most of us refer to her simply as “Cleopatra” She wasn’t the only Cleopatra. Her full title was Cleopatra the 7th, Philopator, meaning there were 6 Cleopatras before her. One of them was her mother, Cleopatra the 5th Tryphaena , who is depicted in this worn-down bust. You’ve probably heard before that the royal bloodline in ancient Egypt consisted of first cousins or siblings marrying each other. It’s highly probable that Cleopatra’s mother and father were brother and sister.

She eventually became one of the most remembered names in history, but her reign didn’t start smoothly. The first three years after she became pharaoh came with its problems, One of the most massive volcanic eruptions of the past 2,400 years happened during her rule, leading to famin, plague, and drought. Her subjects blamed her for the river’s low flooding. The waters were needed to irrigate crops, meaning not only was there a lack of drinking water but also a lack of food.
7. Makeup Medicinal Purposes
All the statues, paintings, and text show that ancient Egyptians loved their eyeliner, but there was more to that black makeup than for aesthetic purposes. That eyeliner was known as ‘black kohl,” and it had medicinal uses. They used kohl to treat eye diseases such as trachoma, cataracts, con-junc-tivitis, and more. The heavy dark liner also shielded your vision from the harsh sunlight as well as protected you from flies and sand blowing in the wind.

We know these two had a kid together, but where did this relationship start? When Cleopatra and Julius Caesar became an item, she was only 21 years old, and he was already 52 and married on top of that. They met because Julius Caesar visited Alexandria after defeating Pompey, a Roman general, who fled to Egypt. Caesar and Cleopatra became acquainted in the Egyptian capital. They fell in love, and Caesar brought her to Rome. Roman subjects were scandalized by the move and even more enraged when Cleopatra referred to herself as the queen.
5. The Mighty Naval Fleet
As we all know, Julius Caesar was stabbed by Roman senators. After his passing, Cleopatra fled back to Egypt with her son. Eventually, she formed a romantic relationship with another major figure in Rome: Mark Antony. The two got along well and enjoyed partying together. Back in Rome, Octavian was waiting to take her down. Rome and Egypt were warring with each other and Octavian decided to strike by sea. Cleopatra had an impressive fleet under her command, consisted of over a dozen warships. In combination with Mark Antony’s fleet, they thought they could rival Octavian. However, the Roman Emperor’s fleet was much too large, and Cleopatra’s and Antony’s fleet were chased back to Egypt.
4. The Drinking Club
Aside from their political conflict with Rome, Cleopatra and Mark Antony also had other things on the side they spent their time on. For instance, they had a drinking club! They dubbed the group as the “Inlimitable Livers” and it entails what you think it does. Members played games, held contests, and drank together. Sometimes, they would all dress up in disguise and go out onto the streets of Alexandria and play pranks on people.
3. The Truth Of The Asp
It has long been thought that Cleopatra took her own life by allowing herself to be bitten by an asp, also known as the Egyptian cobra. That was the accepted idea for centuries. However, this may not be true. Greek and Roman historians say she most likely coated a comb or hairpin with a toxic ointment and ran it through her hair.

So maybe she wasn’t the prettiest woman in the room, but if Cleopatra had anything going for her, it was her intellect and personality. To make a good impression, Cleopatra made sure to make a grand entrance. When she first met Julius Caesar, she hid in a carpet that she then rolled out of to reveal herself. When she was set to meet Mark Antony, she arrived at his location while sitting in a golden barge with purple sails. The oars her servants used were made of pure silver. No wonder she considered herself a goddess!
