Alexei Navalny, 44, Putin's arch-nemesis who is currently serving three years in a Russian penal colony, 'could die at any moment' as his health deteriorates amid hunger strike, his doctor has said.
The news prompted Joe Biden's national security advisor Jake Sullivan to warn of 'consequences' if Navalny is allowed to die in jail, a day after Biden said his treatment is 'unfair' and 'inappropriate'. Navalny has proved to be just the latest flashpoint of tensions between Biden and Putin, who have clashed over Moscow's troop-build up along the border with Ukraine, as well as election interference and hacking - which Biden punished with sanctions earlier in the week.
